The Workshopsman

Being the fishing fanatic I recently acquired a remote control bait boat. Works good but the irritating part was the recharging of alarm batteries after every 4/5 bait drops. This was worse when waters were rough. So then, there was the birth of my new venture— rip out the electric and go NITRO!!!! I had to do afew mods to the glow engine - first make up a new crankshaft with extended crankpin for the starter adapter - second make up a starter gearbox for the motor for easy starting

The first pic shows the machined blank and the eccentric clamping jig used in to hold the blank for machining of the crank pin. The blank is straight forward but the crank pin proved challenging. The original crank shaft can be seen as well.

Pic 2 is the blank clamped in the chuck within the eccentric jig. You will see the slit in the clamping jig. This slit continues through the centre of the jig to about 10mm beyond the jig centre. To save time I cut through half of the  section to be machined (hacksaw).

Pic 3 With snail pace - a few hours later, the completed specimen.  I couldn't believe the result!  The hole drilled into the shaft will form the fuel channel and it was now time to plan the positioning of the FRV (front rotary valve). This is an ingenious setup I discovered. Details of this can be found here. This was really exciting stuff as all was done on CAD and it all worked perfect! The bottom two pics show the machining of the FRV and engine overhaul with new crankshaft.

The new crank shaft with extended crankpin is now ready for assembly…
